Two New Classes Available!

Now available for enrollment, Advanced Shawl Design:

With this 6-week class you will learn how to design a shawl using advanced design skills.
Lessons will include:

• How to design different shawl shapes including square, circular, hexagon, and Faroese.
• How to modify different shapes.
• How to incorporate an edging into your design.
• How to customize stitches to create unique designs.

Prerequisites required:

• You must have taken the Design Your Own Shawl class; or at minimum:
• Have knowledge of how to design a basic top-down triangular shawl.
• Have knowledge of how to write a chart using Excel or other knitting software.
• Have knowledge of how to format a pattern to include basic instructions along with design charts.

An email will be sent to you, the week prior to the start of class, with the link to the class site where you will need to register for the class.

This class will begin Monday, September 10, 2012 and end Sunday, October 21, 2012. Orders will be taken until Sunday, September 9, 2012.

With this 3-week class you will learn how to knit a basic sock with some minimal options.
Lessons will include:

• How to knit a basic, top-down sock

Prerequisites required:

• Basic knitting skills - how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off.
• Ability to knit in the round with double-point needles.

Needing Online File Management?

I'll try to make this not seem like an ad :)

I needed an online file management resource so I came across one called Dropbox. What I liked about it was that I got a good amount of free space, I don't really need a lot right now, plus you can access your files from anywhere you have an internet connection - including any internet capable devices, such as your phone or iPad. You can upload any type of content - photos, videos, PDF files, other document files - and you can share folders for other people to view. You don't have to go to the website to upload your files, and you don't have to use FTP to upload anything. You can install the software on your computer, then you can copy files directly to the Dropbox folders on your desktop. Whenever you add new files, it automatically updates all of your locations (computer, iPad, etc). Plus they have a free app on iTunes to download. There are also ways to earn additional free space, right away, including referring other people.

So, I'm posting My Link here. If you use my link to sign up for a free account - I did mention it was FREE right? - you will automatically get an extra 500mb of space on your account (and so will I). Then you can earn more free space for your account by completing a few tasks, and referring other people!

You will need to install the desktop application on your computer, after you sign up, before the free storage space is applied.

Zoya Share the Love

Okay, I don't normally do this because it seems fake but here goes:

If you haven't heard of Zoya, it's a brand of nail polish, created in 1986, that has no toxic ingredients such as toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). They have tons of colors and come out with new collections each season. They also have other nail care and skin care products that are salon quality. You should check them out!

Time for a Change

I decided to update my blog. I've had the same template since I started it, forever ago. Since Blogger updated their format I felt like I wanted to update mine, especially since I'm planning on changing my logo soon.

I've also been thinking about writing more about me and not just what I'm selling. So we'll see how that goes! I don't seem to have much time to think, let alone write anything down.

Still trying to get things caught up with my clubs, working on the Decadently Dark Sock Club May sock now. Just got all the Birthstone and Zodiac yarns ready to mail out for May, on their way to the post office in the morning. Then I'll just have the May Jewelbox and Avalon patterns to finish, then dyeing for next month's stuff, plus try to get patterns finished for the Spare Parts KAL and dye yarn for the Mystery Shawl #28.

You know how things tend to snowball? Well that's what happened. It started way back in December, my husband was sick for 2 weeks so I got behind on my dyeing, which put me behind on getting patterns finished, then it was just behind, behind, behind...then other family issues, my own health issues, and the further behind I got.

So here I am, almost caught up, hoping to get a head start on this month!

• Knowledge of basic lace knitting.

Introducing the Spare Parts KAL #2 - a knit-along for leftovers!

Many sock patterns use only a half skein of sock yarn so you have leftover yarn. Here’s an opportunity to use up those leftover skeins! Or a chance to use a small skein of luxury yarn you don’t know what to do with!

Details:

• Start date is February 18, 2012; each project will be added to Ravelry, to preview, the week before it is posted to the group.
• Deadline to order is March 31, 2012.
• There will be eleven (11) projects, plus a bonus leftover lace project, over a period of twelve (12) weeks.
• Each project should use approximately 200yds of sock/fingering weight yarn (except bonus project).

These clubs are ongoing clubs, so there is no deadline to join; however when you receive your first shipment will depend on when you place your first order.

New Shawl Pattern

A new shawl pattern, Eye of the Storm, is now available from Goddess Knits.

The inspiration for this pattern was two events that occurred, in Iowa, in 2008. The first was an EF5 tornado that wiped out part of a town and the second was massive flooding that caused damage to several communities.

This is a Limited Edition pattern and will only be available to purchase until August 31, 2010. $8 out of each pattern sale will be donated to American Red Cross disaster relief - if you wish to donate more you may purchase more than one copy of the pattern.

Successful Lace Knitting

I wanted to announce that a new book, featuring one of my designs, is expected out in May of this year. Successful Lace Knitting: Celebrating the Work of Dorothy Reade by Donna Druchunas features more than 25 lace designs by several designers. We've all chosen a stitch pattern from Dorothy Reade to use for our designs. Dorothy's work is timeless and inspirational.

My pattern "Copper Queen" is a lace stole with beaded accents; picots added around the edge give a little more visual appeal then a plain garter stitch border. After choosing the yarn color and beads, I decided to name the project “Copper Queen”, inspired by the Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee, Arizona which is not far from Tucson where I grew up.

The reason I chose the stitch pattern I used was because I thought that the Victorian-style design would make a beautiful shawl. Since my project is a stole, I wanted a pattern that looks the same no matter which way you view it and this one fit the bill.

The yarn I used was Jamieson & Smith 2 Ply Jumper. I picked this one mostly because I have never worked with it and this was a great opportunity for me to try it. Since it has been used quite a bit for lace projects I knew it would be an excellent choice for this one.

I feel like Laceknitting is such a wonderful way to produce something extravagant and intricate, that looks impossible to make and can potentially become an heirloom piece, something that can be passed down from generation to generation. With endless combinations of just a few simple stitches, a finished lace piece can give you a great sense of accomplishment.

Almost every time I finish a shawl and pin it out to block I am amazed, “wow, did I really make that?”. Although sometimes it can be a bit challenging to follow more complicated patterns, it is usually well worth the time invested to create something you, or a giftee, can cherish for years to come.

Successful Lace Knitting by Donna Druchunas will be released in May on the Musk Ox & Glaciers Knitting Cruise, where Donna will be teaching along with Lucy Neatby. The audio book edition of Arctic Lace (http://sheeptoshawl.com/arcticlace.html) will also be published at the same time, so cruise participants will be among the first to have a chance to see (and hear!) these two new releases.

New Beginnings

Finally got started on "Eye of the Storm". So far I've finished the first chart, it will be a little slow going since I have several other projects to complete but here's a peek:

"Storm" Progress...

...finally! I finally found some time to work on the pattern for the "Eye of the Storm" shawl. I spent like 2 full days working on it. The first day I get it all charted out, yay, okay I like this, this is good. Then, next day, getting ready to format it - okay, I really don't like how this part looks...and this part..don't really like it. Another full day, coming up with about six different versions, narrowed it down to four - which one, which one?
